Supporting the Transplant Community
State of mind and preparation is an important aspect of coping with the demands of any organ transplant. Doctors, nurses, social workers, and other medical staff can offer advice and encouragement, but no one understands the process like someone who has actually experienced it firsthand.
New Life Transplant Group
Florida Hospital's New Life Transplant Group is a psycho-educational group for Florida Hospital patients undergoing evaluation for transplant, awaiting transplant, and post transplant. It also serves as an informational and emotional resource for patients both before and after transplant. Meetings are held regularly in which patients can listen to guest speakers, share experiences, voice concerns, and volunteer to help others.
New Life Mentor Program
The New Life Mentor Program provides one-to-one contact between people living successfully with a transplant and people who are new or adjusting to the world of transplantation. The New Life Mentor Program has trained mentors who have a desire to help support others through the transplant process. All organ groups are represented in The New Life Mentor Program. Mentors provide hope and encouragement, share their personal experiences, and most importantly, they're good listeners. They offer support on an as-needed basis from a simple phone call to a hospital visit to personal meetings. Unlike a support group, in a mentoring relationship real life experiences are shared and even the smallest questions get answered privately and confidentially.
If you are interested in being a New Life Mentor, or in having a New Life Mentor contact you, please contact the Social Work Supervisor at Vera.Gray@flhosp.org.
